Backup issues

I recently formatted my laptop harddrive. I'm running windows XP Pro. I backed up all files to my 500GB WD external drive. All is fine except that I'm now unable to retrieve my excel files and no one has been able to really help. These spreadsheets are very important to me. Please advise suggestions for retrieving this information.

What happens when you try to open them?

Nothing is there. The only thing there are the files I had saved in my backup in a MY Documents folder. I forgot to save my Excel files this way when I reformatted. I can't find them on my backup drive.

I found them...I did a harddrive search and there they were!!!! An awesome find.

Premature reaction...I found ones from a year ago that were in a folder on the G:/ drive. The search will not look in the actual backup. I know those files are in the backup.

I'm not sure I can help but how was the backup saved? Using Windows backup or something else?

Yes it was a windows backup. ( system tools - backup )

I did this and it doubled up my files and filled my harddrive. I only have 18GB free now.
