Basic custom data validation formula

Hi all,

How would I go about making sure that any data entry in a column (say column A), is less than or equal to the value of a specific cell (say c1). I thought this was pretty easy and I think I've done it before, but I can't seem to get it to work now.

By validation, do you mean return something along the lines of "False" or "No" if it is greater than the value in C1? Or maybe a colored cell? What do you mean by "make sure" any data is less <= the value in C1?

Select A1, enter the validation formula =(a1<=$C$1)

Copy the cell, pasteSpecial>Validation it to the rest of column A
