blacked out comments

In Excel 2000, when I roll over a cell with a hidden comment, the comment box shows up completely blacked out. When I select the comment, or edit it, it shows up fine and sticks for a while. But next time I open the file they're blacked out again. If I choose Show Comments, they're all black until I edit each one, and it doesn't stick.
