Hi.

I know this is possible bc my intern was able to do it but now that I'm trying to replicate it....I can't seem to figure out how he did it.

Before everyone asks about changing the format, etc. it is not an option. We use a "bowler" chart which tracks the plan vs actual for key metrics.

I'm not sure how to add a screenshot or file so I'll try to explain this clearly. This is a very simplified view. In the view below, the Plan is Row 2 and the Actual is Row 3. I want the Project 12 to be a merged cell merging Row 2 and Row 3.

PROJECT Jan Feb Mar
Plan 5 5 7
Project 12
Actual 6 7 6

Normally, I could simply merge row 2 and 3 for column A "Project 12". But that does not allow me to sort the table by project. The intern figured out how to make Row 2 and 3 for Column A a merged cell that actually contains Row 2 is the name "Project 12" and Row 3 is an equation = Row 2. Before merging it appears as Column a Row 2 and Row 3 BOTH say Project 12. When he merged it, it allowed us to sort the table.

With his file I can unmerge it and it unmerges as Row 2 is the name "Project 12" and Row 3 is an equation = Row 2 with both Row 2 and Row 3 showing Project 12. I can't seem to get my merged cell to do the same. When I merge it- even if I re-merge his cells - it has a pop up that only the top left data will be retained and I lose the Row 3 equation.

Anyone know how he did it??

Thanks
Scott

Excel Facts

Format cells as time
Select range and press Ctrl+Shift+2 to format cells as time. (Shift 2 is the @ sign).
Figured it out.

Have Row 3 reference Row 2. But instead of merging the cells, merge two adjacent rows in another location and use format painter. Highlight the dummy merged cells, click format painter then select the two target cells. It now merges teh cells but each cell retains its value/formula. You can now use the filter.
