Bracketing numbers

How do you format the cells in Excel 2000 to always put numbers in brackets?

The number lengths will be variable so I can't just to a custom format.

I have tried using the following in Excel 2000 to get brackets around my negative numbers but it doesn't work properly - what am I doing wrong?
_(*#,##0.00_);_(*(#,##0.00);_(*"-"??);_(@_)

That doesn't give me what I want. I want negative two thousand to show as:
(2,000.00)
The above solution gives -[2000]
Excel 2000 wants to keep giving me -2,000.00
