calculated item in pivot table

I cannot create a calculated item in a pivot table - I get message cannot create calculated item on grouped field. This is confusing - I am using example in book pivot table data cruching ch 6 'Creating Dashboard. The two fields are Fiscal period with deata as 200205, 200206, 200207,.... 200402, 200403, 200405; also have revenue field. I am trying to create the item showing current period vs last period using '200404' / '200304' - 1. I cannot even get to the insert calculated item .. because it says cannot use grouped fields, ungroup and try again. What am I missing?

Have you tried to ungroup them?

Yes, I clicked on the field and clicked ungroup. I tried this several times.

OK, obviously the problem is that the data is grouped. If I click on the item fiscal period and t6hen click ungroup, to no avail, then what is the suggestion? What am I missing? It has to be something obvious. Any suggestions?
