Calculating Text with a Formula

I have a dashboard report where I want to show both the numerator and the denominator as I type them in, not converted into a number. Then I want another cell to take that numerator and denominator and return a percentage. Is this even possible?

So I have 5/5 (entered as text) in A1, for example. In another cell (B1) I want it to calculate 5/5 and return 100%.

Many thanks for any help.

Excel Facts

Difference between two dates
Secret function! Use =DATEDIF(A2,B2,"Y")&" years"&=DATEDIF(A2,B2,"YM")&" months"&=DATEDIF(A2,B2,"MD")&" days"
Try this formula in B1, and format the cell to display as a percentage.

Code:
=VALUE(LEFT(A1,FIND("/",A1)-1))/VALUE(RIGHT(A1,LEN(A1)-FIND("/",A1)))
