Calculation option in 2007

I have a spreadsheet that the calculation is set to automatic except for tables, but when I open the spreadsheet (no other sheets open) the "calculate" sign is on the status bar at the bottom, and if I hit F9 it goes away. Now if I change a cell, the "calculate" comes back on. I am thinking it should recalculate automatically. Is this something flaky with Excel 2007?
