I have an excel worksheet that all of a sudden will not open. It opened fine yesterday. Gives error message "excel cannot open the file because the file format or file extension is not valid.” I have data on it that I desperately need to get back. Any help would be greatly appreciated

What is the full name of the file (including the file extension)?
What version of Excel are you using?

It seems to think that the file is not in a valid Excel foramt.

Did you open this file using something other than Excel recently?
Did you change the file extension recently?
Or did you did a "SaveAs" and choose a different format?
Was this file originally created in Excel 2007?

If none of these things is out of the ordinary, it may mean that you have a corrupted file.

never opened it with anything but excel. Yes it was created with excel 2007 on this machine. I have other reports for other citys and they open fine.

Unfortunately, I would say that may mean you have a corrupted file.

If you fo a Google search on "repair corrupt Excel file", you will find a number of programs that claim to do this. I cannot speak as to how well any of these work, I have never used any.

Do you back-up your files regularly? If so, just get the last good back-up of this file. (If you don't, it is a good time to start a back-up plan!).
