Can you dynamically filter a data set in place but control the filter function from a different worksheet?

Hi There,
I've created a summary table with formulas referring to the main data set in a different tab so when I apply a filter to the primary column the summary figures will change to reflect what is selected. I've created a searchable drop down list (in the summary worksheet) for the user to select the value they want but I can't find the solution to make this the driver to filter the main data in the different worksheet.
I've managed to do it via advanced filters however, when I try to select a different value the summary table wouldn't adjust. It's stuck on the previous filter and I have to clear this filter and then do the whole advanced filters process again therefore it doesn't work dynamically.
Does anyone know of a solution to this?
Thanks
