Cannot update links

Excrel 2007 is killing me. I have 3 files, A,B,C. C reads from A and B which are identical format. These were all created in 2003, which worked great.

I have saved them all to .xlsm. That part works. Now in file C I am trying to update my links from a.xls to a.xlsm and to b.xlsm from b.xls.

When I click the change source button for link a.xls, it prompts me for the new name to replace a.xls. I choose a.xlsm. The I automatically get a box prompting me for the replacement of b.xls (my original dialog still has link a.xls highlighted). No matter what I pick to replace b.xls, the box never goes away. I end up having to kill excel and the links are not updated.

Help! I do not want to go into every formula to edit the link name.

Any ideas on what to do?

thanks
Fred

Excel Facts

Why does 9 mean SUM in SUBTOTAL?
It is because Sum is the 9th alphabetically in Average, Count, CountA, Max, Min, Product, StDev.S, StDev.P, Sum, VAR.S, VAR.P.
Rather than using the update links..try find/replace

replace "xls" with "xlsm"

I thought this would be easy but Excel 2007 is crap... I tried the find and replace and the **** thing gets hung and has to be killed. If I do a find only, I get roughly 22,000 hits. That takes just a few seconds. The find and replace never ends.... Seems like every **** thing I try casues Excel to hang.

I let the search and replace go all night and it finished. Next time I will turn off calculation. I would have thought that no calculations were redone until all replacing had finished....

thanks
