Can't access addins

This may be a stupid question, but I reckon sometimes it's better to ask than to guess.

I've been trying to use the solver add-in for Excel 2003. When I try to use it, I get the message "Microsoft Excel can't run this add-in. This feature is not currently installed. Would you like to install it now?"

When I click 'Yes', Windows Installer comes up and starts running. Then, I get the error message "Microsoft Excel can't run this add-in. The feature is not available." When I click 'No' to exit, I get the error message

"Microsoft Office cannot access the file 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\LIBRARY\SOLVER\SOLVER.XLA'. There are several possible reasons:
*The file or path name may not exist.
*The file is being used by another program.
*The workbook you are trying to save has the same name as another workbook.

I'd be very grateful for any help I can get with this. Thank you!

When you finished the install, did you go to Tools > Add-Ins and check the Solver option?

Or did the installation give the message while it was trying to install the addin?

Try the first suggestion first. If that's a no-go, quit Excel, insert the Office installation disk and choose the option to modifiy or repair. You may find that you didn't have a full install, and will need to install some missing features -- such as Solver.

Then, check Tools > Add-Ins, select Solver, and you should be set.
