can't change format

I have a column of tax ID numbers in this format...xx-xxxxxxx.
No matter what I try I can't remove the -.
Any ideas??

is xx-xxxxxxx what is displayed in the FORMULA BAR when cell is selected?

or do you see xxxxxxxx in formula bar?
If so, it's a custom format that's doing it.

can you use the find/replace function?

or via formula

=--SUBSTITUTE(A1,"-","")
