Can't edit blocks of cells at the same time

Hello

Say I want to update a block of cells A1:A5 with the same value / formula. Normally (assuming the cursor is at A1), I would select the aforesaid range, input the desired value/formula in cell A1, then press Ctrl + Enter. Then all the cells in the aforesaid range would be updated with the same desired value/formula.

However, this doesn't seem to work just now. Despite following the above steps, Excel reverts to the selection of cell A1 only (instead of selection of the block A1:A5), and only cell A1 (not other selected cells) was updated with the desired value/formula.

Great if anyone here would help/advise, thanks! I'm using Excel 2003.
