Can't open Excel files by double-clicking on them

On one particular computer, every time I double-click any XLS file, Excel starts, but the spreadsheet won't open. If I first start Excel, then click "file" "open", it opens just fine. I get an error: the system cannot find the file specified. Microsoft said to go to tools, options, general and clear the "ignore other applications" check box. I did that, but the problem remains. What do I do?

Sorry, didn't read all of the question.
I must admit I've never seen that it didn't work.

Hi Dave.
If you are using Excel 2000 or 2002, run Detect and Repair from the 'Help' menu.
If this does not correct your issue (or if you are running an earlier version of Excel) please let me know - there are other measures to investigate.

Regards,

Detect and repair didn't solve the problem, but here's what did. I removed Office 2000, ran Eraser2k.exe (which I downloaded from Microsoft - it erases registry settings for Office and cleans up leftover files). I then re-installed Office. It works great now. Thanks for the suggestions.
