Cell counting help

Hi

I am trying to write a formula to count all the cells in Column A and populate Column B with the answer, but the formula has to note a change in column A

for example

Column A Column B
Fish 4
Fish 4
Fish 4
Fish 4
Cow 2
Cow 2
Dog 3
Dog 3
Dog 3

Hope that makes some sence! many thanks in advance

=COUNTIF(A:A,A1)

Sorry I didnt really explain that very well, not quite as simple as that

What I required was a count on two differentials ie

Fish Blue 3
Fish Blue 3
Fish Blue 3
Fish Red 1
Dog Blue 2
Dog Blue 2
Cow Yellow 1
Cow Red 1
Cow Blue 1
