Cells changing to =#NA

I have a complex Excel workbook that was started in Excel 2003. I'm now using a combination of Excel 2003 and Excel 2007 (although I have no idea whether this is related to the problem). The workbook has formulas that link to maybe a dozen external workbooks that are saved in a variety of Excel files around our network.

Mysteriously, many of the externally linked formulas have changed to =#NA. [I don't mean that the result of the formula has changed to #NA; I mean that the formula itself now says =#NA.]

I found some people with similar problems around the internet, but no-one seemed to offer any solutions.

Anyone have any ideas what causes this and what might fix it?

one possible cause is that the link refers to an old (2003) file (with the .xls extension) but the file has been converted to XL2007 (with the .xlsx or .xlsm extensions). In those cases, you'll need to update the links. First call of action is to see what all filenames are that being referenced in your files and then check all the real names as they exist on the computer or server.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm afraid it's not the problem. All of the files being referred to are Excel 2003, and have not been changed to Excel 2007.

Anyone else have any ideas?
