Cells with numbers and text

Good Day to all the great minds out there.

I need a little help with this very simple problem.
I want to be able to treat a colulm of cells as numbers only, even when they include text.
example:
colulm A is quanity but it may contain 12lf
and colulm B is a price if $3.00
and colulm C is the total
I want colulm A to be reconized as a number so that
when A*B=C

Something like this ? :-
=VALUE(IF(RIGHT(A1,2)="lf",LEFT(A1,LEN(A1)-2),A1))*B1

I'm confused tho.
Isn't there some sort of cell condition that will work in place of a formula?
I thought that it would be similar to changing colulm A to "text" only
instead of text, the cells would be treated as numbers.

Your solution works fine in colulm C
