I screwed up somehow and changed the file extension on a workbook to a template...now I get an error and EXCEL cannot open it...how can I change the file back to a workbook extension without being able to open the file?

Excel Facts

Fastest way to copy a worksheet?
Hold down the Ctrl key while dragging tab for Sheet1 to the right. Excel will make a copy of the worksheet.
I think I must have dons something like that.....not so sure I didn't open a template as a workbook (TEMPLATE1) and then change the name after making changes back to just template and replaced the original template...so now, I think I may be trying to open a workbook instead of a template

I think if I can change this to a XLSX format and resave it, I would be OK, but I do not know how to do that without being able to open it

You do not need to open it to change the extension. Go to the file (icon) and right click the file and select rename. Rename it with the new extension and answer Yes you want to change it. Now try to open it.

I believe that it is a wookbook saved as a template.....when I try to change the name and add .xlsx to the end, it does not ask if I want to change it, but rather it just changes the name and I still can not open it
