Hello,

I need help with a macro that's out of my current knowledge of VBA.

I'm using cells A10:E109. The event should be triggered whenever I go from one cell to another and it should highlight Rows A:E for the given range whenever the macro detects a date format in cell C of that row. Forgive my example below if it doesn't conform standard Forum guidelines.

Excel Facts

What do {} around a formula in the formula bar mean?
{Formula} means the formula was entered using Ctrl+Shift+Enter signifying an old-style array formula.
The assumption is that Account name is never blank until the end of the table. This will end the loop early.

Code:
Sub HighlightDateRows()

Dim r As Range

    For Each r In Range("C:C")
        If r = "" Then Exit For
        If IsDate(Right(r, 8)) Then
            Range(Cells(r.Row, 1), Cells(r.Row, 5)).Interior.ColorIndex = 44
        End If
    Next r

End Sub

How are the dates getting placed in Column C... manually by the user or does the cell have a formula in it that updates on some condition? Also, is the data always going to be on the end of the text in the cells in Column C (and will there always be a dash/space in front of it?

Thank you for the questions Rick...

Yes, the dates will be entered manually and will always be at the end of the text with space or dash in front of it. Since it is entered manually, i would like an event to run the code whenever I click on another cell (or hit "Enter if possible".

Thank you for the sample Marchut...

The code is similar to what I wrote but i would like it to change colors as I go down the list instead of having to run the macro manually. Does this make sense?

Give this event code a try (it reacts to changes in the value of cells in Column C from Row 10 on downward)...

Code:
Private Sub Worksheet_Change(ByVal Target As Range)
  Dim Cell As Range, LastRow As Long, CellVal As String
  LastRow = Cells(Rows.Count, "C").End(xlUp).Row
  For Each Cell In Intersect(Target, Range("C10:C" & LastRow))
    CellVal = Replace(Cell.Value, " ", "-")
    If InStr(CellVal, "-") Then
      If IsDate(Mid(CellVal, InStrRev(CellVal, "-") + 1)) Then Intersect(Columns("A:E"), Cell.EntireRow).Interior.ColorIndex = 6
    End If
  Next
End Sub
And I am guessing that you probably will need to run the following macro (maybe in the workbook's Open event, or perhaps the workbook's Close event) to clear out the colors from the previous day so that you can tell when the current day's Column C cells change?

Code:
Sub ClearHighlights()
  Dim LastRow As Long
  LastRow = Cells(Rows.Count, "C").End(xlUp).Row
  Range("A10:E" & LastRow).Interior.ColorIndex = xlColorIndexNone
End Sub

I forgot to mention that I have some other data below row 110 so the "LastRow" won't work. I tried modifying the code to limit the range to C10:C109 and took out the "LastRow" from the code but the change in cell value didn't trigger the event. Any ideas?

I solved it. Didn't realize they have to reside in Private Modules so I was able to get both codes to work properly. I will test them both to see which one fits best.

Thank you Rick and Marchut.

Only one of my code procedures should go in a "Standard" Module, the other should go in the worksheet's code module. Here are simple instructions on how to install each...

EVENT: Private Sub Worksheet_Change(ByVal Target As Range)
------------------------------------------------------------------
If you are new to event code procedures, they are easy to install. To install it, right-click the name tab at the bottom of the worksheet that is to have the functionality to be provided by the event code and select "View Code" from the popup menu that appears. This will open up the code window for that worksheet. Copy/Paste the event code into that code window. That's it... the code will now operate automatically when its particular event procedure is raised by an action you take on the worksheet itself.

MACRO: Sub ClearHighlights()
--------------------------------------
If you are new to macros, they are easy to install and use. To install it, simply press ALT+F11 to go into the VB editor and, once there, click Insert/Module on its menu bar, then copy/paste the above code into the code window that just opened up. That's it.... you are done. To use the macro, go back to the worksheet with your data on it and press ALT+F8, select the macro name (ClearHighlights) from the list that appears and click the Run button. The macro will execute and perform the action(s) you asked for. To make things simpler for you (especially if you will need to call this macro often), when you select the macro from the list, before clicking Run, you can click the Options button and assign a keyboard shortcut to it first and then use that keyboard shortcut the next time you want to run the macro.

That is exactly how I had it done and it worked. Currently I can do without the ClearHighlights Macro but may later place it in the Auto_Open module (haven't had an instance where I may need to delete the date). I also modified and tested Marchut's example and it worked as well. This is the code. Do you think one has advantage over the other?

Private Sub Worksheet_Change(ByVal Target As Range)
Dim r As Range
For Each r In Range("C10:C109")
If r = "" Then Exit For
If IsDate(Right(r, 8)) Then
Range(Cells(r.Row, 1), Cells(r.Row, 5)).Interior.ColorIndex = 44
Else
Range(Cells(r.Row, 1), Cells(r.Row, 5)).Interior.ColorIndex = xlColorIndexNone

End If
Next r
End Sub

Rick,

Is it possible to use two Events within the same worksheet without using "if" function (i.e. have two different macro codes). I don't see how to do this as Worksheet_Change macro is used by one of them.
