I have a spreadsheet that I’m going to sell on either a monthly or yearly basis (I’m selling both, the user has option to pick). I know I can put in an expiration code in a macro and run that macro upon opening the document and not allow access if the current date is after the date in the macro.

Two questions:

1. Is there a better way to control access for a limited time?

2. If this is the best way, is there a way I can update the date upon renewal with a separate macro or do I have to send a new spreadsheet after renewal?

You should be aware that Excel's built-in security is not that advanced, and can be defeated without too much effort by someone who has an inclination to do so.

Also, an issue with trying to control access via VBA code is that all they have to do is open the workbook while disabling VBA code to bypass that.

Typically, the built-in Excel security is best served to prevent people from "accidentally" doing things they aren't supposed to.
But if you have someone who is intentionally trying to bypass security measures, they can usually figure it out with a little effort and the help of things found on the internet.
