changing a formula on visible cells only within a filtered selection

trying to change a formula on visible cells only within a filtered selection. when I use fillbar, it changes formula of the hidden rows too. I tried Home> find and select> go to special> visible cells only but I must be doing something wrong.
help- please and thank you
