Character limit in a cell

Can someone please tell me how many characters a cell will hold? And does it matter what the size of the cell is? (I merged cells to create a large block to be typed in electronically. I'm receiving complaints about the typed information all showing up in the formula bar, but ending abruptly in the cell itself, even though there is space left.)

This is from XL2000 help text:

Length of cell contents (text) 32,767 characters. Only 1,024 display in a cell; all 32,767 display in the formula bar.
