Chart option "Connect data points with line" does not stick, how to lock this option in?

Hi all,
In Excel 2007, I have a chart where I've gone and set the "hidden and empty cells" option to "Connect data points with line". When I test this right as I set the option and save the workbook, it works fine. When the sheet is reopened later (after having some code populate new data from a database), the chart just shows the dots and they aren't connected. Some charts, however, do retain this option, others don't, I don't see any clear pattern as to which ones keep the option and which don't.

As far as what kind of chart this is...I don't know, so a sub-question would be "how do I tell what kind of chart was originally chosen when the chart was created?"...since the chart has existed for years and I didn't create it. I don't see a "Properties" option, and when I click "Change Chart Type", nothing is 'pre-selected' as what one might expect to show the current type.

Thanks for any help,
jombi
