Charts, External Links, and Out of Memory Error

I just want to know if this is to be expected:

I am trying to open a worksheet that contains five separate charts. Each chart contains four series. Each series has an x-axis and y-axis reference to an individual file of about 10000 cells. I am getting errors like "unable to save external links" and "out of memory". Is this to be expected?

I also just discovered that it will update the external links if the reference file is under a certain size. 2.7 MB reference files will update their links, but 4.1 MB reference files were not. Is there an adjustment I need to make to allow bigger files as the reference for external links?
