Closed Files Remaining in VBA Editor

I have Office 365 on Windows 8.1. There are no Add-Ins. When I close a certain workbook it still appears in the VBA Editor. Reopening the workbook sometimes produces another instance of the workbook in the VBA editor which also continues to appear in the VBA Editor after closing the workbook ad infinitum. Other times, upon reopening the workbook there is but a single instance of the workbook in the VBA editor. When the workbook is closed I can still select most of the individual sheets and modules in the VBA Editor and see the code. Selecting some of the sheets produces an "out of memory" warning. I am nowhere near out of memory. It is interesting that the sheets associated with the warning are the two sheets without any VBA coding. When the workbook is open I can select any sheet in the VBA Editor without getting error messages. Restarting Excel does clear the phantom workbooks from the VBA Editor. Bottom line: 1) Can I keep these phantom files from appearing (remaining after closing) in the VBA Editor? 2) If not, is there some way (preferably VBA code) that will remove the phantom files once they do appear?
