hoping I am putting this in the right forum...

I am learning what I know on the job- so I may lack on ettiquette- I am wondering:

When is it ok versus not ok to copy from a web page that explains exactly what you are looking to do?

And if it isnt ok...can I retype something very similar that I see ???

Excel Facts

Convert text numbers to real numbers
Select a column containing text numbers. Press Alt+D E F to quickly convert text to numbers. Faster than "Convert to Number"
People put code on web pages so that other people can use it.

My practice is to maintain any attributions in the original code (author, whatever), and copy the URL to the code so people can go see the original. If I modify it, I say so, so that people know that any mistakes are likely mine and not the original author's.

The cardinal sin, IMO, is to remove the author's name and insert one's own.

Good question, what I usually do is if I find a webpage (or any source) that states exactly what I am trying to describe, I make sure to cite the source. Basically, give credit where credit is due. If you don't cite your source, then it plagiarism and in a professional (especially high profile) environment, that could lead to some serious repercussions. If one were to profit from plagiarism, then lawsuits could get involved. Depending on the content you are going to use and what your use for it will be, it might be a good idea to contact the original author for permission.

And depending how/where you intend to display this information does determine what method you should use to cite.

Do a google search for "How to cite a website", and you will find a plethora of ways to cite.

However, if it is code you are copying, follow what Shg has described. That pretty well sums it up nicely. :)

Hope this helps!
