Color Palette Changes unexpectedly

I have had this intermittent problem for a while: at certain times the color palette in a worksheet will unexpectedly change, mixing up the colors so grey turns to orange, etc. This has happened to both the font color and background color palettes. It typically happens when i have multiple workbooks open, though I haven't been able to trace the color palette to a particular spreadsheet or macro. I don't believe I have any macros that alter the color palettes.

Does anyone have any tips for getting to the bottom of this, or know of this issue? thanks,

Excel Facts

Copy formula down without changing references
If you have =SUM(F2:F49) in F50; type Alt+' in F51 to copy =SUM(F2:F49) to F51, leaving the formula in edit mode. Change SUM to COUNT.
I have also came accross this, but haven't figured out why or how it happens. usually I just clsoe out Excel completely open a blank sheet, reset the color palette and then close thats heet and re-open the original sheet and the colors are fine again. I have also noticed at times that some of my toolbars are different. But I also have no clue why this happens as I don't have any code that alters the color palette. But I believe I have also noticed this when I have many very large files open as to maybe it doesn't have enough memory resources for it.
