COLUMN help

It's difficult for me to explain why, but what I need is to nest an HLOOKUP inside of a COLUMN function. I have the HLOOKUP set up so that the row it displays has (B2, C2, D2, etc.) entered in those cells. What I want is to nest this HLOOKUP inside a COLUMN so that the result of the HLOOKUP (B2 or whatever) is recognized as the [reference] for the COLUMN and the overall result would be an integer representing that column (i.e. for B2, 2; for C2, 3, etc.). For some reason, Excel will perform the HLOOKUP fine, but when I put the COLUMN around it, it gives me the error message. This is what I have:

=COLUMN(HLOOKUP(B4,'TMR Data'!A1:I2,2,FALSE))

As I said before, the HLOOKUP portion works fine without the COLUMN around it. What could I be doing wrong?

Thanks for your help!
