combining data in a pivot

Is there a way in a pivot table to combine columns of data into a new column. In the example below can I combine "cats" and "cat-Kitten" into a new column called CATS witha total of 22. Same issue for dogs.


Cat Cat-Kitten Dog Dog-Puppy

Here is a way I can think of straight away:
use Grouping to group "cats" and "cat-Kitten" and to group "Dog" and "Dog-Puppy". You can name the new groups as you like. Then remove the original field ( the new groupings should generate a new field level ).

Tried that but I get a message "Can't group that selection"

Select the items to group prior to grouping. Use ctrl key if they are non-consecutive
