combo box and vlookup functions

I have a combo box that is linked to a list of keys that stand in for objects and there amounts. I have a conditional function setup so that whenever I select a key from the combo box, the cells containing the object and amount get highlighted with a certain color.

Like This:

ap1apple333
ap2apple sauce25324
be1bake24234
ap2apple sauce25224
ca1cake231244

<tbody>
</tbody>

The combo box is filled with the keys and has a linked cell that acts as the trigger for the conditional formula. So I select the the key from the combo box, say 'ap1', then the linked cell gets filled with ap1 right next to it, then A1,B1,C1 all turn red.

However, now I want to see if I can change the combo box so that its filled with the objects (column B here) rather than the keys (column A here). Because the conditional format is set to go off when the trigger cell (say its D1) AND anything in column A both have the same exact text, I can't change the combo box to objects without throwing off the conditional format.

So, I tried using a v-lookup and/or index function with the combo box so that when an object is in the combo box its corresponding key appears in the trigger cell (so that the conditional formatting goes off), but has not been working. All I need is for the trigger cell to populate with the keys, but the combo box to display the objects.

Any ideas? Thanks and sorry if its confusing.
