Good evening can anyone tell me the best way to compare 2 columns in Excel 2010 so that if the second column is lower than the first column it displays red and if higher displays green. I have looked at conditional formatting but cant find a solution. Thanks

I don't have xl2010, (only '03 and '07), but I can't imagine '010 would have changed too much in this regard, so I'm assuming when you say "I have looked at conditional formatting but cant find a solution." that you just haven't found it yet.

With that in mind, (and again, I don't know the layout of '010 or where anything can be found) but if you select B1 and go into conditional formatting and use:
Cell Value Is > Greater Than > =A1 and format to suit (green background) and then for condition 2, do the same thing only using Less Than instead of greater than, and format the background to be red, I would have to think it should work.

Oh yeah, then you can use the Format Painter to copy the formatting and apply it to your whole range of interest.

If I'm way off base here because of the version differences, then I apologize for wasting your time. (in which case I suppose I should think about upgrading, eh?)

Hope it helps.

Hi tried it and I can get it to work in the first cell but when I use format painter it doesnt work I only actually need the cells in the second column to be highlighted when lower than the first column so it would be great but I cant copy it down. if you can think of anything else ....

If copying the format doesn't work then I would check in the conditional formatting formula used in the first cell (that does work) for any dollar sign characters ($) in the cell reference. If you find any and remove those then copying the format should work on the other cells as well.

Also (and again, I don't have '010 so I'm not sure) but when you're in the conditional formatting, look for a 'condition 2' (rule 2 maybe?) or something like that. This should allow you format the cells to highlight different colors for higher and lower.

Hope it helps.
