complex if statement

Ok not sure how to explain this. in column a i have a list of item numbers. in that column there are many duplicates. so say it "abc" exists what i am looking to do is when it gets to the second "abc" to rename it abc2 then abc3 for the third and so on. any ideas

Does the VLOOKUP table have to be sorted?
No! when you are using an exact match, the VLOOKUP table can be in any order. Best-selling items at the top is actually the best.
Assuming you have the data in A2 down you could use this formula in B2 copied down

=A2&IF(COUNTIF(A$2:A2,A2)>1,COUNTIF(A$2:A2,A2),"")

If you want that data to replace the original then copy column B, then use > Edit > Paste Special > Values > then delete column A
