Each customer can have more then one invoice, when a customer pays I need Excel to find the oldest invoice and subtract the payment from the the amount due. When an invoice is paid fully, Excel would find the next oldest and start paying that one off.

Am I expecting Excel to do too much or is there a way to do something like this via pivot tables and macro's?

What is the fastest way to copy a formula?
If A2:A50000 contain data. Enter a formula in B2. Select B2. Double-click the Fill Handle and Excel will shoot the formula down to B50000.
Welcome to MrExcel.

To return the position of the earliest invoice for the name in E1 try:

=MATCH(MIN(IF(A$3:A$11=E1,C$3:C$11)),C$3:C$11,FALSE)

confirmed with Ctrl+Shift+Enter. This is an array formula that Excel will surround by curly braces {} if correctly entered.

Thanks Andrew but I don't really follow

What are fields A, C and E supposed to be?

Thanks

My formula assumes that the data you posted is in the range A1:D11 and that the name to look up is in E1 (you didn't give any locations).
