Compound growth

trying to calculate compound growth over a period of six years. these are the values I'm using:

If I did this calc on a calculator, for example, I would calculate the difference between 2006 and 2001 (i.e. +4.29%) and then calculate the per annum growth from this figure. What function would I use for this in Excel? Have tried XIRR and NOMINAL but doesn't seem to work, I'm probably way off the mark!!
