Conditional Formatting with if statements

I know this is probably really simple but I cannot get this to work.

I want to have a cell switch colors if another is blank.

I tried the if(isblank(A1)) formula I use normally, but it doesn't want to work with this formatting.

Any suggestions?

there is no need to use an if statement in conditional formatting

=Isblank(A1)
