I would like to shade a row of cells if the value in one cell within that row is equal to a given number.
Example ifc2>0 then format cells a2:z2 the formatting would simply be a shading so that it clearly defines that that row is no longer active
so if c2=1 then all cells in that row from a2 to z2 would be shaded over. I beleive this is something I can do in conditional formatting but have tried and not been able to achieve it.

Excel Facts

Back into an answer in Excel
Use Data, What-If Analysis, Goal Seek to find the correct input cell value to reach a desired result
select the rows you need.
use this formula for conditional formatting: =$C2>0
Set the desired format and apply.
If you selection starts from row 1 adjust the formula as =$C1>0.
If it starts from a different row adjust accordingly.

Sorry to comebak to you,and please excuse my ignorance, but whilst that works on oneline i:e row 2, can the formula be written so that as I go down any number in the c cell that is greater than 0 automatically formats that row example C2:C100. Total sheet is A2:Z100

Did you follow this instruction?
select the rows you need.
That is, did you select A2:Z100 before proceeding to the next step?

two ways to deal with this:
- Conditional formatting > manage rules ... > This worksheet> Edit the range of the rule to match your needs
- Select the last formatted row > right click and drag down the small square/dot in the corner > when you release it select Fill Formatting only

I also think that inserting rows takes the formatting from the one above.
