Conditional Sum based on the first character

Can someone tell me whether it is possible to get the conditional sum based on the first character of a series of cells, without creating an additional column.

Links? Where??
If Excel says you have links but you can't find them, go to Formulas, Name Manager. Look for old links to dead workbooks & delete.
