A1 is a formula which produces a date.

Conditional formatting will not work on this cell unless it is a value not based upon a formula

anyway around this?

Eg A1 contains Index match formulas. - I want this to go red if it matches date in B2 but only works if a physically type the date in A1

Make sure dates in cells A1 and B2 are of the same type -- that is, both are text strings or both are numbers.

Conditional Formatting does not really care if the value is hard-coded or derived from a formula.
What it does care about is the data types of the values it is comparing.
As Tetra201 alluded to, if you are comparing a number/date (dates are really numbers) to a string, it will not work. You need to compare similar data types.

A good test is the following: Find an apparent match.
Then try this formula:
=A1=B2
If this returns FALSE, they are NOT the same (equal), and hence Conditional Formatting will not do what you want. You must fix your data first.
