converting 1099 to $1,099 ?

I can't seem to convert a column of numbers to their dollar equivalent with the comma separator... (1099 to $1,099 for example)

I selected the cells, and tried:

currency $1,234

number 1,234

custom #,##0

Nothing seems to work....

Can anyone help ?

Try Format/Cells/custom and in type type in
$0,000

Are the cells locked?

the $0,000 didn't work..... and the cells don't appear to be locked.


I did try it in another worksheet, though, and it works ok there....


I do have conditional formatting on these cells to change their background color if they don't match other cells, but that doesn't seem to matter when I tried it on the other spreadsheet....

Aren't the cell text values?

If so, you need to convert them to numbers

1) select column in question
2) go to Data - TextToColumn and hit Finish

Then apply the cell format
