Converting 9 digit zip codes to 5 digit

Please help!

I have a 7000 line file of 9 digit zip codes that needs to be converted to 5 digit zip codes. Anyone have an easy formula(I am not an excel whiz) so if it can be spelled out please that would do this? I am gathering that the formatting cells isnt working because you cant change the cell data. Someone told me about a VLookup functionality for this but I can't seem to get the formula right.

Any help would be most appreciated.

first thing to do: post sample data + expected results
have a look in the helpfiles for RIGHT, LEFT, MID (perhaps FIND, SEARCH)

What is your country? As you know Zip codes are country specific.

Please explain what are the 9 digit zip codes, the 5 digit zip codes and how they are converted one into the other.
