Copy cell from one sheet to another sheet with text in it

I have a cell on sheet1!A1 that user can enter the text:
"C", "O", "S", "T", or "X"
I have another sheet2!A1 that copies the Text IF entered from sheet1!A1.

The formula I have in sheet2!A1 is:
=IF(sheet1!A1,sheet1!A1,"")

I have all cells formatted as General.

PROBLEM:
I get the following error on sheet2!A1 when sheet1!A1 has Text in it:
#VALUE

any ideas?

=IF(Sheet1!A1<>"",Sheet1!A1,"")
