copy formulas

How can I copy formulas instaed of writing them out. I want to sum up each col from a-f.

I tried to copy and paste eg =sum($a1:$a20) to col b but this fails.

You would need your formula to be like this to copy and paste to b:

=sum(a$1:a$20)

Why is this as the a$ is the relative address?

$ before the column will not change the column. $ before the row will not change the row. Since you are trying to copy across columns, you need the column to change and not have a $ in front of the column because that will make it not change.
