Copying a chart from one spreadsheet to another

I'm not exactly sure what the problem is.
I have been able to copy charts quite easily however having put data labels on the bar chart I'm using it crashes when I try to paste to the new spreadsheet.
The data labels are not the values that create the bar chart so I think its something to do with how the values for the data labels are assigned.
Are there limits to the extent of the links within and between spreadsheet?
