Corrupt File in 2007??

I open my xls file (which I just saved and closed about 2 minutes ago). It is 1,700kb. When I open it I can see the spreadsheet with no problem. Then The screen (within the window) turns white. I open it again and it has a recovered file to the left. But I can't click on anything and the screen goes white again. I did manage to save a repaired copy (I think) but it's just the text without any formatting. I don't have time to reformat all of it. Is there anyway to open something up in a "safe mode" or something like that? Grrrrrr!!!!!!
