I have a large wookbook with many hours spent. When I try to open it does an illegal operation and shuts down. Is there any means to correct the files or is it lost forever. I do not have a backup of the recent file.

Excel Facts

Which came first: VisiCalc or Lotus 1-2-3?
Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston debuted VisiCalc in 1979 as a Visible Calculator. Lotus 1-2-3 debuted in the early 1980's, from Mitch Kapor.
Hi, try opening the file while your computer is in Safe Mode.

You can sometimes retrieve data from corrupt workbooks by using formulae. So, create a new workbook with the following formula in A1 and substitute "=[Book1]Sheet1" for the name and sheet of the corrupt workbook.

=[Book1]Sheet1!A1
