count cells

hey trying to reference a value in a cell and count how many times that referenced cell appearsin a column of data. countif won't let me reference a cell. any help
 

Excel Facts

Move date out one month or year
Use =EDATE(A2,1) for one month later. Use EDATE(A2,12) for one year later.
Hi there,

Why won't it let you reference a cell?? What have you tried? How about ..


=COUNTIF(A:A,A1)


Where column A is the range of interest and A1 is the cell [value] you want to count.

ok .... yesterday it wouldnt work today it does I must have been making some simple mistake :oops: thanks guys
