Count/Sum using multiple criteria

Hello All!

I am trying to get a count using multiple criteria. I have two columns and I need the count if the criteria matches. Please see below:

I need the count of the 1st, 2nd or 3rd QC per person even if the name column contains two names. In this example Scott's total for 3rd QC should be two.

I have tried using a sum formula as an array but the wildcard doesnt seem to work. Here is the formula I am trying:

{=SUM(($A$6:$A$14="2nd QC")*($B$1:$B$6=("*Scott*")))}

I think I am going about this the wrong way so any help is greatly appreciated!
 

Excel Facts

Format cells as date
Select range and press Ctrl+Shift+3 to format cells as date. (Shift 3 is the # sign which sort of looks like a small calendar).
Thanks! That works great when the info is on the same tab. When I change the references to an entirely different spreadsheet I get a #NUM! error. Is the formula provided limited or something?

Here is what I modified the formula to:

=SUMPRODUCT(--('[07-30 Jax Audited Accounts.xls]Pending'!$I:$I="3rd QC"),--(ISNUMBER(SEARCH("Scott",'[07-30 Jax Audited Accounts.xls]Pending'!$K:$K))))

Unless you're using Excel 2007 or 2010, SUMPRODUCT won't accept entire columns as valid ranges.

If the size of your dataset is likely to change, consider using dynamic range names.
