Count The Number Of Cells In A Column Containing A Character

I am hoping someone can help me with a vba solution in which a count is obtained, of all the cells in column A that contain the character: "-"
I can do it with a loop, but seems like that might be an inefficient way of doing it.

VLOOKUP to Left?
Use =VLOOKUP(A2,CHOOSE({1,2},$Z$1:$Z$99,$Y$1:$Y$99),2,False) to lookup Y values to left of Z values.
Sort by date Sort by votes
How about:
Excel Formula: 
=COUNTIF(A:A,"*-*")
