Countdown Formula?

I would like to create a countdown formula that would calculate how many days until someone's start date. I know I can do A2-TODAY(), but that will result into a negative number if the date has passed, or if a person just doesn't have a date period. If there is no date, the result would be -43172.

I would like the formula to only reflect a positive number if the date is still in the future, and the word "Hired" if a negative number. I will make sure everybody has some type of start date.

Excel Facts

Create a chart in one keystroke
Select the data and press Alt+F1 to insert a default chart. You can change the default chart to any chart type
How about this:

=IF(A2-TODAY()>0,A2-TODAY(),"HIRED")

This will return HIRED if the Start Date = TODAY. If you want it to just show 0, then change the > to >=.

I just realized that I didn't account for not having a hire date. If you need to account for that, try this:

=IF(A2="","",IF(A2-TODAY()>0,A2-TODAY(),"HIRED"))
